Child Safety Seats and Restraints in Victoria

In Victoria the driver of a vehicle is responsible for ensuring all occupants are properly restrained for the duration of the journey. Failing to do so can result in a substantial fine and the loss of demerit points.

All vehicle occupants must be seated properly while being restrained with an Australian Standards approved restraint. For small children this will be an infant/child restraint, booster seat or safety capsule.

The restraint needed for your child will be determined by their age and size.

Child Restraint Guidelines

  • Infants under 6 months need to be fastened in an approved rear facing restraint such as a safety capsule.
  • Children between 6 months and 4 years need to be fastened in an approved rear facing restraint or an approved forward facing restraint.
  • Children between 4 and 7 years need to be fastened in an approved forward facing restraint with harness or an approved booster seat.
  • Children 7 and over need to be fastened in an approved booster seat if appropraite for their height and weight.
