From the 30th of November 2010, national regulations were put in place to increase safety for children in the event of a car accident. Research has shown that a child restrained in an Australian Standards approved child seat is less likely to receive injuries or be killed in an accident.
The driver of the vehicle is responsible for ensuring the safety of all vehicle occupants under 16 years of age that wear a child restraint. Failing to do so can lead to the loss of three demerit points and a $350 fine.
Taxi drivers are exempt from these regulations and penalties, but they are still responsible for ensuring children between 4 and 16 are properly restrained.
To be sure you’ve done everything possible to keep your child safe, make sure you have your child restraint fitted by an Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station.
