Workshop Advice

You’ve got an exit strategy for the business, but do you have one for yourself?

Most workshop owners start their business for good reasons. Independence, pride in quality work, supporting family and building something of their own. What often gets less attention is the question of how long you want to do it for and what success really looks like at the end.

If you have never stopped to think about when you would like to exit your workshop, you are not alone. Many owners simply keep going until circumstances force a decision. That can limit your options and reduce the value of what you have worked so hard to build.

Why not having an end point can hold you back

Without a clear long term goal, it is easy to make short term decisions that feel right now but work against you later. This can include underinvesting in staff, staying too hands on in the business, or avoiding systems because they feel unnecessary.

Over time, the workshop can become heavily reliant on you personally. That makes stepping away difficult and selling or transitioning the business far more challenging.

Practical questions to help clarify your big picture

You do not need a detailed exit plan on day one. What you do need is clarity around why you are in business and what you want life to look like later on.

Ask yourself a few simple but powerful questions...

  1. How many more years do I realistically want to work full time in the workshop?
  2. Do I want to sell the business, hand it over to staff or family, or step back into a management role?
  3. What income will I need from the business in 5, 10 or 15 years to support my lifestyle?
  4. What parts of the business do I enjoy most and which ones drain my energy?

Your answers help set direction. They also guide decisions around staffing, systems, branding and investment.

Turning intention into action

Once you have a timeframe in mind, even a rough one, you can start aligning the business to support it. This might mean gradually training others to take on responsibility, improving your financial reporting, or focusing on customer experience and retention.

Starting with the end in mind is not about rushing towards the exit. It is about building a business that works for you today and gives you choices tomorrow.
