Not sure if you need a new battery? Start with a battery test

If you’re unsure whether your battery needs replacing, a battery test is the best place to start. Your local Repco Authorised Service centre can check the condition of your battery and charging system, then let you know whether it can keep doing its job or if it’s time for a replacement.

Signs your car battery may be failing

Signs your car battery may be failing can include slow or hesitant starting, dim headlights, flickering dashboard lights, electrical issues or a battery warning light on your dash. You may also notice problems after your car has been sitting for a while, or during very hot or cold weather. If your vehicle is showing any of these signs, it’s worth having your battery tested before it leaves you stranded.

Can I fit my battery myself?

Yes, but modern vehicles can be more complex than they look, especially vehicles with start-stop technology, battery management systems or advanced electrical features. Fitting the wrong battery, or installing it incorrectly, can cause issues beyond simply getting the car started. If you are unsure, your local Repco Authorised Service centre can fit the correct battery and check the charging system at the same time.

What does a car battery do?

While car battery technology has changed over the years, the primary function of the battery hasn’t.  A battery provides a charge of electricity that is utilised by the starter motor and ignition system so the engine can turn over and start.  The battery then maintains a constant electrical charge to keep it going, along with any extra power required when a car’s electrical system needs are more than the alternator is capable of supplying.

The battery also acts as a voltage stabilizer in the electrical system and smooths out any transient voltages that may occur.  The battery also supplies power to items like the ECU, radio and clock when the vehicle is not being used.

Commonly asked questions about car batteries

Why does my car battery go flat?

Like any part in your car, your battery has a lifespan.  As batteries age they slowly lose capacity simply through general use.  In addition to this, electrical shorts can occur, components can corrode over time and vibration can also cause damage.  The average age of a passenger car battery is about 42 months. In addition to general age, the following issues can impact battery life:

Having your battery tested regularly can save you a lot of time and hassle by identifying the potential life left in your car’s battery.

Can I put any battery in my car?

The short answer is no. Your vehicle needs a battery that is suited to its size, electrical demands, driving conditions and technology, especially if it has features such as start-stop or advanced battery management systems. Fitting the wrong battery can affect performance, reliability and even some vehicle systems. Your local Repco Authorised Service centre can help identify the correct battery for your vehicle and, where suitable, fit a quality Repco battery designed to keep you moving with confidence.
