The exhaust system of a vehicle is a complex beast. The process starts near the engine where manifolds connect to the cylinder heads and collect the gases created by the engine. These gases then travel through a series of pipes until they reach the oxygen sensors, which determine how the catalytic converter treats the gases to make them more environmentally friendly. They then travel through the muffler, which makes them quieter. 

Oxygen sensors
The oxygen sensor is a small electronic device that is located in the combustion exhaust manifold of a modern vehicle engine. It is designed to detect and measure the amount of oxygen that is being expelled in the exhaust gas and send this information to the computer control unit, to tell the catalytic converter how to treat the gas.
