Hybrid electric vehicles have been commonplace on Australian roads, albeit in limited models. However, this is set to change as many vehicle Manufacturers commit to swapping their production of petrol and diesel cars to electric and hybrid versions to meet emission targets and Government regulations banning or limiting the traditional combustion engine in countries across the world.
What is a Hybrid vehicle?
A hybrid vehicle is just that, a car that provides you the environmental benefits of using an electric motor with the convenience of a traditional petrol or diesel engine as well.
There are two types of hybrid vehicles:
Which Hybrid car type is right for me?
It depends on where you live and how you drive. Both have environmental benefits.
Do Hybrid cars need servicing?
Yes, just like any vehicle, your Hybrid still needs servicing. However, as a complex piece of technology you need experts with the right training and equipment to properly service your vehicle.
How often does my Hybrid car need to be serviced?
Not only does your car have a traditional combustion engine, your hybrid vehicle also has an electric motor. Both need to be serviced regularly to ensure that your car is safe and reliable. Logbook servicing by a qualified technician also helps protect your warranty.
What gets serviced on my Hybrid car?
With essentially two engines in one, all the traditional service items like brakes, cabin air filters, shock absorbers and essential fluids like driveline oils, brake fluid and coolant all need to be regularly checked, as do steering and suspension systems. Like any vehicle, items like spark plugs, tyres, wiper blades, lights, air and fuel filters also need to be checked and replaced as necessary. Plus, the electric motor components, of which there are fewer (see our electric vehicle page for more information) also need to be checked and replaced when scheduled.
In a hybrid vehicle the 12-volt battery also plays and important part and should be regularly checked and replaced as needed.
What sort of battery does my hybrid car need?
This will vary depending on the model vehicle, however battery packs for hybrids are designed to last longer than traditional vehicles. They are also model specific, so you need an expert to advise you and install them. Battery life for hybrids varies from model to model and should be considered when selecting a model to suit your family.
What does it cost to service my hybrid car?
Costs to service your hybrid vehicle vary greatly depending on make and model and if it is a regular logbook service or if more extensive repairs are required.
